How Often Do We Need to Check Your Mouth for Oral Cancer?

How Often Do We Need to Check Your Mouth for Oral Cancer? If you want to avoid big problems with oral cancer, you need to spot the signs as early as you can. The sooner you see the signs of oral cancer, the easier it is to treat it.

Knowing the signs of oral cancer is the first step, but it does not end there. If you don't look for the signs, you cannot ever spot them. That is why it is important to know how to check for the signs of oral cancer. It is also a good idea to know when to look and how often to check for the signs.

Assessing the Risk Factors

When deciding how often to get checked for oral cancer, you have to think about the risk factors that you face. The more risk factors that you have, the more often you need to get checked. Risk factors include the family history. If there are others in the family who have had oral cancer, that puts you at a higher risk. Other risk factors are about your behavior. People who smoke or use tobacco products, excessive alcohol use or have STDs are at a higher risk.

Self-Exams and Oral Screenings

There are two ways to check for oral cancer. The first is through self-exams. Look for the signs of cancer that include sores that cannot heal inside of the mouth or on the lips, wither or reddish spots on the inside of the mouth or lumps and growths inside of the mouth. These types of self-exams can happen as often as you want, including every day as part of your oral health routine.

Oral cancer screening should happen at least once a year. It can be a part of a routine dental exam or it can happen at a separate appointment. If you have some of the risk factors, you may want to increase the screening in our office to twice a year.

What Our Patients Are Saying About Us

"I recently had to have a tooth extracted and was very nervous. Dr. Choyee and his staff went over and above to make me feel comfortable. It turned out to be an easy procedure and I was done quickly. I would definitely recommend Dr. Choyee for any oral surgery needs you may have. Dr. Choyee even called me that evening to make sure I was doing well and had no problems!"
