|It is something that every adolescent fears. They worry about the day they are told they need braces to fix their bite. Underbites and overbites result from many different things. Before deciding to do something about an underbite, it is worth asking what the options are. When is it necessary to fix an underbite and when can you live with the problem?
What is an Underbite?
Many people confuse the underbite with the overbite. They are both conditions where the teeth are not properly aligned, but they differ in what they look like. In an underbite, the lower jaw protrudes beyond the upper teeth. Because of this, when the mouth is closed, the bottom teeth are in front of the upper teeth. Most people are born with the underbite. It is not something that happens or changes over time.
The Need for Dental Treatment
It is easy for people to live with a slight overbite. It does not affect the way their mouth and jaw work and for that reason, a minor overbite does not need fixing. An underbite is different. Because it is not able to fix itself, even minor underbites need some type of treatment.
If a person does not get treatment for an underbite, they put themselves at risk for complications. Some of the complications from an untreated underbite include:
People that do not get their underbite corrected often struggle with a low self-esteem. Straight teeth and a good smile are important in today's world and are a good reason to always fix an underbite.
