Lying on an Incline Following Oral Surgery Can Speed Up Recovery

Posted on 2/28/2019 by Dr. Simon Choyee
Lying on an Incline Following Oral Surgery Can Speed Up RecoveryIf you are having oral surgery, you are going to want to do anything that you can to speed up your recovery. You probably already know that you will need to take your antibiotics. You have heard which foods you should eat and which you should avoid.

You also most likely know that you will need to rest to allow your body to heal. There is one thing that you may not realize about your recovery. It all has to do with how you rest and sleep while you are healing.

Incline
While you are healing from oral surgery, you need to make sure that your body is at an incline while you sleep. This does not mean that you need some type of special equipment. All that you need is pillows. It is as simple as that.

If you are unsure of what sleeping on an incline is supposed to be like, there is a simple way to know. Your head needs to be higher than your heart. You should be at a 45-degree angle if possible, but you do not need to try to figure out what the angle is. As long as your head is elevated above your heart, you should be fine.

It is recommended that you sleep at an incline for at least three days and nights following oral surgery. This will help with the healing process. If you feel throbbing in your mouth or jaw when you lie down, try adding another pillow. You may not have elevated your head enough.

We will let you know everything else that you need to be aware of before your surgery. As always, if you have any questions, do not hesitate to ask. We want to make sure that you heal as quickly as possible.

What Our Patients Are Saying About Us

"I recently had to have a tooth extracted and was very nervous. Dr. Choyee and his staff went over and above to make me feel comfortable. It turned out to be an easy procedure and I was done quickly. I would definitely recommend Dr. Choyee for any oral surgery needs you may have. Dr. Choyee even called me that evening to make sure I was doing well and had no problems!"
